Browsing the database needs a reasonably large display. It is just about possible to use a phone display in landscape mode, but this cannot be recommended.
Click on this link to load the database viewer in a new browser tab. There is no need to login. Most controls will be familiar from similar applications.
The master table, People, includes the following columns:
- Name & Dates
- Brief – a sentence or two of description
- Category – selected from this list
- Wikipedia – link to Wikipedia entry, if it exists
- ODNB – link to Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry, if it exists
- Other Ref – link to a relevant online document or the name of a relevant publication
- Ancestry – link to an Ancestry ‘Facts’ page for the individual
- Status – place markers for this person will only be added to the map if the status is include; other values can be seen in the drop-down list in the Advanced search dialog
ODNB is behind a paywall, but can be accessed for free by signing in with a Camden or City of London library card number. Ancestry is behind a paywall, but can be accessed for free on public computers in Camden and City of London libraries.
If there are any additional notes associated with an individual, the light blue button shows the number of these. Click on the button to display or hide these notes as indented rows.
The dark red button shows the number of addresses associated with an individual. Click on the button to display or hide these addresses as indented rows. The Addresses table includes the following columns:
- Name & Dates
- Address – today’s address, or what it would be if the building was still standing
- Contemporary Address – the address at the time residency commenced, if different
- Resident – dates of residency
- Notes – e.g. whether there is a memorial plaque or whether the building has been demolished
- Map Coordinates – location of the place marker in the relevant map
- Streets volume – the map containing the place marker
- Status – a place marker will only be added to the map if the status is include; other values can be seen in the drop-down list in the Advanced search dialog
There will normally be at least one additional note associated with each address, listing the evidence for the address and residency dates. Click on the green button to display or hide these notes as indented rows.
The simple search control at the top of the display searches across all the text fields in the selected table. For example, search for Woolf and several records will be displayed; some containing a match in the Name & Dates field and some where the match is found in the Brief field.
For a more flexible and specific search, choose Advanced search from the settings menu next to the simple search control. For example, if you wanted to browse People whose surnames began with the letter G, choose Advanced search and enter:
When People is selected, both simple and advanced searches apply to this table together with the ‘people notes’. In order to search in addresses and ‘address notes’, choose Addresses from the main menu bar. When Addresses is selected, the View record icon at the beginning of an address row can be used to jump to the parent record in the People table.
To clear search filters and display all entries, click on the cross in the simple search control. If the search term is more than a single word, use double quotes in the simple search field but not in the advanced search fields.
